Do I need approval from Transport Canberra and City Services for works in the verge?

Answered and approved · Planning · kept in 1 place

Yes. If your development involves works on or affects the verge, approval from the ACT Government area responsible for Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) assets may be required before those works are carried out. The verge is public land and is not part of the adjoining residential property. This commonly applies to new or modified driveways, vehicle access, works affecting street trees or other public assets, excavation, and other construction activities within the verge.

Yes. You generally cannot carry out development-related works in the verge as though it were part of your property. Because the verge is publicly owned land, the relevant approval needs to be obtained for works that affect it.

For example, if a dual occupancy requires a new driveway across the verge or changes to an existing driveway, approval is required. The driveway design must also meet the applicable TCCS standards, including requirements relating to street trees, footpaths, services and other public assets.

The exact approval depends on what you propose to do in the verge. Minor activities such as simply maintaining grass do not require approval, while further landscaping or additions generally do.
